Sources
Every article links to the specific records it relies on. These are the systems those records come from.
Primary records
- Court opinions — CourtListener, a project of the Free Law Project. We link to each opinion’s page and summarize it in our own words. Our articles are not produced, endorsed or verified by the Free Law Project.
- Consumer complaints — CFPB Consumer Complaint Database, published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. We report counts by company, product, issue, state and date. The CFPB notes that complaint data is not a statistical sample, and a complaint is not a finding of wrongdoing.
- Vehicle safety recalls and owner complaints — NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Owner complaints are unverified reports, not findings of a defect.
News and agency announcements
We use headlines, dates and links — not article text — from these feeds to find and connect stories. When an article relies on one, we name the outlet and link to the original.
- Insurance Journal and Claims Journal
- Repairer Driven News
- Courthouse News Service
- Federal Trade Commission press releases
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau newsroom
News coverage is also located with GDELT data.

How we use sources
We do not copy text from any source. Short quotations, when used, are 15 words or fewer, in quotation marks, and linked. Numbers and dates are taken from the source as of the date shown on each article.
